Kubo suffered an injury during the match between Japan and the Netherlands on June 16th. In the 75th minute, the Real Sociedad midfielder collided heavily with defender Denzel Dumfries in a fierce challenge. The 25-year-old appeared to be in pain and was unable to continue playing, forcing him to leave the field early.
After the match, images of Kubo struggling to move around the stadium, even needing a wheelchair at times, caused considerable concern among Japanese fans. In a brief statement to the media, the player admitted he was unable to determine the exact severity of the injury.
An MRI scan revealed Kubo suffered an injury to his left knee. The 25-year-old star remains at the Japanese national team's training camp but is unable to train with his teammates. This makes his chances of playing in the matches against Tunisia and Canada slim.

This has been another difficult season for Kubo. In January, he was sidelined for several weeks due to a muscle injury sustained while playing for Sociedad. After returning at the end of March, Kubo was unable to regain his best form and only scored two goals all season.
The 2026 World Cup is seen as a stage for Kubo to prove himself. However, his latest injury is seriously threatening the chances of this highly anticipated star of Japanese football to shine.
