Is New York entering the summer of its wildest dreams – or will it be a cruel summer of events?

With the World Cup, rumours of Taylor Swift’s wedding and mass celebrations for the United States’ 250th birthday, the city that never sleeps and Zohran Mamdani, its millennial mayor, have a lot going on.

The global pop star, engaged to Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce since August 2025, has been the subject of months of speculation about when and where the couple will marry.

No date has been publicly confirmed by Swift or Kelce, but rumours have swirled across fan forums and tabloids alike.

Now, New York City’s mayor has added fresh fuel to the fire.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Mamdani discussed preparations for the July 5 World Cup match at MetLife Stadium and noted that the game coincides with several other “big events” taking place in the city that weekend.

“We are the biggest city in the country,” Mr Mamdani said. “We are used to big events, and we are incredibly excited for this one.

“We know it coincides with July 4, America 250, Taylor Swift’s wedding all happening at the same time,” he added.

The remark immediately prompted speculation that Swift’s wedding would take place over Independence Day weekend, July 3-5, in New York, a theory long circulated among fans.

Mr Mamdani was later asked whether he had been invited. “No,” he said. “I wish them a lovely wedding. I’ll listen to ‘Only the Young’ at home on my own.”

Separate rumours have suggested the couple could marry at Madison Square Garden.

The arena has a multi-day gap in its calendar over the July 3 weekend, prompting further speculation among fans.

The venue’s chief executive also appeared to address the rumours, saying media reports about Swift and Kelce receiving complimentary Knicks tickets in exchange for hosting a wedding at the arena were “half wrong”.

When asked which part was incorrect, he replied: “Travis is in a mandatory training camp” and would not be able to attend the game.

Guests at the rumoured ceremony are said to have signed strict non-disclosure agreements, with penalties for revealing details such as the date or venue.
