MANILA, Philippines — Commercial district Araneta City launched its “CoMEOWnity” initiative under its “Pet Pals” program as part of efforts to protect, care and uplift the lives of stray cats living in the area.

Marjorie Go, the business district’s marketing vice president, said in a statement that the program brings together individuals who deeply care for stray cats.

“Through this initiative, we hope to create a city where every stray cat feels safe, respected, and cared for,” Go added.

The program — done in partnership with animal welfare groups Pet Kingdom, CARA Welfare Philippines, City Cats Cubao and Cats of Araneta City — primarily focuses on daily caring acts like regular feeding, safe shelter, medical attention, and adoption drives.

All rescued cats are housed in the township’s cattery where they are given regular meals, veterinary care and primary attention aided by sponsored cat food and essential supplies.

One key initiative with CARA Welfare Philippines is a Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return or TNVR effort to make sure the stray cat population is humanely and sustainably managed.

Meanwhile, an adoption event was held last April 12 at Ali Mall where all rescued and neutered cats found new homes.

“CoMEOWnity” is also dedicated to the late chef Margarita Forés, herself a cat lover particularly of strays, who passed away in February last year.

“Through programs like this, we are in the high hopes that it will encourage greater awareness and shared responsibility toward stray cats,” Go added. “Compassion and empathy are at the heart of who we are — and through them, we affirm our responsibility to care for those who cannot care for themselves.”
