Henderson joins Chelsea on two-year deal
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Jordan Henderson on a two-year contract after the England midfielder became a free agent following the termination of his deal with Brentford. The 36-year-old will join up with his new team-mates immediately as preparations begin for the 2026/27 campaign. Henderson arrives to add experience, leadership and a proven winning mentality to Chelsea’s midfield. His move follows several days of negotiations between the club and the player’s representatives.
“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” Henderson said. “I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.” The former Liverpool captain also outlined his commitment to making an impact both on and off the pitch. “For me, it's about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I'm very excited to get going.”
A decorated career and leadership pedigree
Henderson came through Sunderland’s academy and made his professional debut at Stamford Bridge in 2008. He moved to Liverpool in the summer of 2011 and eventually succeeded Steven Gerrard as club captain at Anfield. As Liverpool skipper, he played a central role in the club’s major successes, including the 2019 Champions League and the 2020 Premier League title. Since leaving Liverpool, Henderson has represented Al-Ettifaq, Ajax and Brentford before beginning the next chapter of his career in west London.
At international level, Henderson has earned 91 caps for England and was part of the squads that finished runners-up at EURO 2020 and third at the 2026 World Cup. Chelsea will hope his tournament experience can help drive standards within a squad undergoing significant change. The midfielder’s arrival offers Xabi Alonso another senior voice in the dressing room. It also provides a potentially valuable on-field mentor for the club’s younger players.
Chalobah set for Como move
While Henderson strengthens Chelsea’s midfield options, the club are also moving forward with plans to reduce the size of the squad. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement with Como for Trevoh Chalobah. The Serie A side are expected to pay €30 million in fixed fees, plus €6 million in add-ons. Chelsea would also retain a percentage of any future sale involving the centre-back.
Romano reports that Chalobah has agreed to the move as he seeks a new challenge in Italy, including the prospect of Champions League football with Como next season. His departure would form part of a wider squad-streamlining project after Chelsea spent close to €390 million on new signings this summer. With more than 40 players currently in the first-team group, Alonso faces a major task in balancing his options. After finishing 10th in the Premier League and missing out on European football for 2026/27, Chelsea are aiming to combine experienced additions with decisive departures ahead of the new season.
